An Envy-Free Lifestyle

A sound heart is life to the body, but envy is rottenness to the bones.

Galatians 5:25-26

Today's society is obsessed with steering clear of things that are harmful to the body. It seems that just about every product is fat-free, sugar-free, caffeine-free, gluten-free, or hormone-free. We spend millions of dollars every year on sunscreen, anti-aging products, organic food, and antioxidant-rich vitamins so as to avoid the potential dangers of sun damage, wrinkles, pesticides, and cancer. In essence, we do our bodies "good" by staying away from those things that are bad for us.

While we know that eating right and taking care of our bodies in general is important, the Bible tells us that "bodily exercise profits a little, but godliness is profitable for all things" (1 Timothy 4:8). Essentially, as much as we take care to avoid unhealthy things for our bodies, we should be even more concerned about staying away from ungodly things in our lives, such as envy.

Nothing good or profitable ever comes from envy. It only creates misery for the envious person. So, if you desire to lead a long and healthy life, remember to do your body good by living an envy-free lifestyle.

The man who keeps busy helping the man below him won't have time to envy the man above him.
