Q: I know I haven't got long to live, because the
doctors have just told me I have liver cancer and it's too far advanced to
treat. I know I need God, but is it too late? I admit I haven't lived a very
good life. -- S.A.
A: No, it's not too late to turn to God, and one
reason God is giving you these extra days is so you'll do exactly that. The
Bible says, "He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone
to come to repentance" (2 Peter 3:9).
Why is it never too late to
respond to God's invitation to accept Jesus into your life? The reason is
because God loves you. All your life you have ignored Him and not loved Him --
but He has never stopped loving you. Listen: If you had been the only person on
earth who needed to be saved, Jesus Christ still would have laid down His life
for you. The Bible says, "This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved
us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins" (1 John 4:10).
What must you do? Christ has done everything that is necessary to make
your forgiveness and salvation possible -- but you must respond. On Christmas,
people may have offered you gifts. But a gift doesn't really become yours until
you actually receive it and take it for your own. And the same is true with
Christ.
By a simple act of faith confess your sins to Christ and ask Him
to come into your life and save you -- and He will. Perhaps this was the last
Christmas you will ever spend on this earth -- but with Christ in your heart,
ahead of you is heaven.
