Jill Briscoe was a child in Liverpool, World War II was raging and
bombs were raining down on the shipyards every night. Jill spent many
evenings huddled in the bomb shelter, reciting to herself the Apostles'
Creed for comfort. The part that puzzled her was the statement: "I
believe in the Holy Ghost." She couldn't figure out who the "Holy
Ghost" was; and as she relates in her book, A Little Pot of Oil,
it was years later when she realized that the Holy Ghost was the
Comforter who comes alongside to help us stay excited about Jesus.
According to
Ephesians 5:18, when we're Spirit-filled, we're under the influence of
the Holy Spirit, as evidenced by a singing spirit ("speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs"), a thankful heart ("giving thanks always for all tings to God the Father in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ"), and a humble attitude ("submitting to one another in the fear of God").
If you're
singing, thankful, and humble today, congratulations! You not only
believe in the Holy Ghost, you're filled with His presence.
The filling of the Holy Spirit . . . is the source of all vital spiritual experience in the life of the Christian.
